Ääniliittymiä, known in English as audio jacks or audio connectors, are a type of electrical connector primarily used for the transmission of audio signals. They are commonly found on electronic devices such as headphones, microphones, speakers, and various audio equipment. The most prevalent type of ääniliittymiä is the 3.5mm (1/8 inch) TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) connector, often referred to as a headphone jack. This connector typically carries stereo audio, with the tip usually representing the left channel, the ring the right channel, and the sleeve the common ground.

Other common sizes include 6.35mm (1/4 inch) TRS connectors, which are frequently used in professional audio equipment like guitars and amplifiers due to their robust construction and lower susceptibility to interference. Smaller 2.5mm (3/32 inch) connectors exist but are less common, often found on older mobile phones or compact devices. Beyond stereo audio, ääniliittymiä can also be configured for mono signals (TS - Tip-Sleeve) or balanced audio, which uses separate conductors for the signal and its inverse to cancel out noise. Additionally, some ääniliittymiä incorporate a fourth contact, known as TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve), which can carry a microphone signal in addition to stereo audio, enabling features like hands-free calling on smartphones. The design and purpose of ääniliittymiä have evolved with technology, but their fundamental role in analog audio signal transfer remains consistent.
