ääniliitin

An ääniliitin, meaning "sound connector" or "audio connector" in English, refers to a physical interface used to transmit audio signals between electronic devices. These connectors are ubiquitous in audio equipment, from headphones and microphones to amplifiers, speakers, and musical instruments.

The most common type of ääniliitin is the 3.5mm (1/8 inch) TRS connector, often found on portable music players, smartphones, and computers for headphone and microphone connections. This connector typically has three conductors: tip, ring, and sleeve, used for left audio, right audio, and ground respectively. In some cases, a TRRS connector with four conductors is used to incorporate a microphone or control signals.

Larger ääniliitin types include the 6.35mm (1/4 inch) TS and TRS connectors, commonly used in professional audio, musical instruments like electric guitars, and studio equipment. These offer greater durability and often better signal integrity than smaller connectors.

Other ääniliitin types exist for specific applications. RCA connectors, often found in pairs of red and white, are used for stereo analog audio connections in home stereo systems and consumer electronics. XLR connectors, characterized by their robust locking mechanism and multiple pins, are standard in professional audio for microphones and balanced audio signals, offering superior noise rejection. The choice of ääniliitin depends on factors such as signal type (balanced or unbalanced), audio quality requirements, and the physical demands of the environment.
