Äänieristävyys, known in English as sound insulation or soundproofing, refers to the ability of a barrier or material to reduce the transmission of sound. It is a crucial concept in building acoustics, interior design, and product development, aiming to create quieter and more comfortable environments. The effectiveness of sound insulation is typically measured using sound reduction indices (SRI), which quantify how much sound pressure level is reduced as it passes through a material or structure.

Several factors influence sound insulation properties. Mass is a primary determinant; heavier and denser materials generally provide better sound blocking. The frequency of the sound also plays a role, with materials often performing better at blocking higher frequencies than lower ones. The construction and sealing of a barrier are equally important. Gaps, cracks, or poorly fitted components can significantly compromise even the most robust sound-insulating materials, allowing sound to bypass them through flanking paths.

Common materials used for sound insulation include dense materials like concrete, brick, and specialized acoustic panels. In construction, creating a double-leaf wall with an air gap or cavity filled with absorbent material, such as mineral wool, is a highly effective method. In products, sound insulation is achieved through careful material selection and design to minimize noise escape, such as in appliances or vehicles.
