Äänentoistimet, commonly known as loudspeakers or speakers, are electroacoustic transducers that convert electrical audio signals into sound waves. They are a fundamental component of virtually all audio playback systems, ranging from personal music players and home stereo systems to professional sound reinforcement and public address systems.

The basic principle of operation for most loudspeakers involves an electromagnet and a diaphragm. An electrical audio signal is passed through a voice coil, which is a coil of wire attached to a cone-shaped diaphragm. This current creates a magnetic field that interacts with a permanent magnet. The alternating current of the audio signal causes the voice coil to move back and forth within the magnetic field, which in turn causes the diaphragm to vibrate. These vibrations create pressure waves in the surrounding air, which are perceived as sound by the human ear.

Loudspeakers are designed in various forms and sizes to reproduce different ranges of audio frequencies. Woofers are designed for low frequencies (bass), mid-range drivers for middle frequencies, and tweeters for high frequencies (treble). Often, a single speaker enclosure will contain multiple drivers, each optimized for a specific frequency range, and a crossover network to direct the appropriate frequencies to each driver. The quality of sound reproduction depends on numerous factors, including the design and construction of the drivers, the enclosure's acoustics, and the overall system's amplification and signal processing.
