ämm

Ämm is a nonstandard orthographic variant that appears in informal writing to convey a prolonged hesitation sound. It is not recognized as an official word in standard German dictionaries. In normal German usage, the common hesitation filler is Ähm, usually capitalized at sentence start, and other forms such as Äh or Hm are also used. The spelling ämm does not have a defined pronunciation in formal references and is mainly found in casual texts or transcripts where authors attempt to signal a drawn-out or emphatic pause beyond a regular uh or um.

The form ämm may appear in online forums, chat, or dialogue in fiction where the author wants to communicate a specific tonal effect—namely a longer or more tense pause than standard fillers.
