The formation of äikeses begins with warm, moist air rising rapidly into the atmosphere. As this air ascends, it cools and condenses, forming clouds. Within these clouds, water droplets and ice crystals collide, generating electrical charges. When the electrical potential difference between different parts of the cloud, or between the cloud and the ground, becomes sufficiently large, a lightning discharge occurs. This discharge heats the surrounding air to extremely high temperatures, causing it to expand explosively and produce the sound of thunder.

Äikeses can vary in intensity, from a single rumble of thunder with a brief flash of lightning to severe storms with heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and frequent, intense lightning strikes.
