Ägguttaget, a Swedish term, directly translates to "egg removal" or "egg retrieval." It refers to the medical procedure in which mature eggs are extracted from a woman's ovaries. This process is a crucial component of assisted reproductive technologies, most notably in vitro fertilization (IVF).

The procedure typically involves transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspiration. A thin needle is passed through the vaginal wall into each ovary to collect the fluid-filled follicles, each of which contains an egg. Before the retrieval, a woman undergoes ovarian stimulation with hormonal medications to encourage the development of multiple eggs. This stimulation phase is carefully monitored through ultrasounds and blood tests.

Once the eggs are retrieved, they are immediately taken to a laboratory. There, they are fertilized with sperm, either through conventional IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The resulting embryos are then cultured for a few days before one or more are transferred into the woman's uterus.
