Üzenj

Üzenj is a fictional cross-platform messaging application and protocol used as a case study in discussions of contemporary digital communication. The name derives from the Hungarian verb üzenni, meaning to send a message, reflecting its communicative focus.

Overview and design goals: The project aims to provide fast, private messaging across devices with a lightweight footprint suitable for variable network conditions. It emphasizes user-controlled privacy, low data retention, and simple user experience.

Architecture and features: Üzenj is described as a hybrid architecture combining client-side encryption with optional server relays. Messages are end-to-end encrypted, with forward secrecy and metadata minimization. The platform supports multi-device syncing, offline message delivery, read receipts optional, and extensible clients in JavaScript and Rust. An open-source reference implementation is provided to encourage interoperability.

History: Conceived by a Budapest-based nonprofit research group in 2021, Üzenj was released as an open-source prototype in 2022 and has been used in academic demonstrations of privacy-preserving messaging. It is not adopted as a mainstream product.
