The concept is derived from the Estonian words "ümber" (around) and "mõõrad" (measure), conveying the idea of a repeated measuring or re‑measuring cycle that changes an individual’s internal estimate of the quantity.

In practice, ümbermekväistes involve an initial, often rough, estimation followed by successive comparisons with alternative basis points, each iteration refining the perception. This iterative adjustment aligns with Bayesian updating principles, where prior beliefs are updated in light of new data. In linguistic contexts, ümbermekväistes is used to describe how speakers interpret words that involve vague or gradable concepts, such as “large” or “fast,” by continuously calibrating their reference points. It also appears in the analysis of argumentation strategies, where rhetoricians repeatedly adjust their framing of facts to match the audience’s expectations and knowledge base.
