Ültetvénygazdaság is a Hungarian term that translates to plantation economy or plantation agriculture. It refers to an agricultural system characterized by the cultivation of large-scale, monoculture crops, typically for export. These crops are often tropical or subtropical in origin and include commodities like coffee, tea, sugar, rubber, palm oil, and cotton.

The defining features of an ültetvénygazdaság include extensive land use, a focus on a single or a few dominant crops, and a labor-intensive production process, historically often reliant on a workforce that was unfree or poorly compensated. Historically, plantation economies emerged during colonial periods, where European powers established large estates in tropical regions to produce valuable goods for their home markets. This model often led to significant social and economic disparities, with wealth concentrated in the hands of landowners while the labor force experienced exploitation.

In modern contexts, while the historical colonial association remains, the term can also describe contemporary large-scale agricultural operations focused on monoculture production for global markets.
