Üleõhustumise refers to a condition where a system, often biological or ecological, receives an excessive amount of a specific resource or stimulus. This can lead to negative consequences and a decline in overall function or health. The term is derived from Estonian, where "üle" means "over" and "õhustuma" means "to become airy" or "to get permeated," suggesting an oversaturation.

In biological contexts, üleõhustumise can manifest as nutrient overload in an ecosystem, such as eutrophication in water bodies, where excess nitrogen and phosphorus cause algal blooms that deplete oxygen. In a more direct physiological sense, it could describe a situation where an organism is exposed to an overwhelming amount of a particular hormone or substance, disrupting normal metabolic processes. For example, chronic overexposure to stress hormones can lead to adrenal fatigue.

Similarly, in agriculture, üleõhustumise might describe soil that is waterlogged, hindering root respiration and leading to plant stress.
