Ülespoole

Ülespoole is a small village situated in Harju County in northern Estonia, approximately 4 kilometres east of Tallinn, the capital city. It lies within the Paide Parish municipality and is part of the Tallinn metropolitan area. The village covers an area of roughly 1.8 square kilometres and, according to the 2021 census, has a population of about 460 residents. The population density is slightly higher than the Estonian average, reflecting its proximity to the capital and its status as a commuter settlement.

The history of Ülespoole dates back to the late 16th century, when it first appeared in land records as a small farming community. Throughout the 19th century, the area developed modestly, largely reliant on agriculture and timber. The arrival of the Tallinn–Riga railway in 1913 improved connectivity, encouraging small-scale industry and the growth of a bedroom‑community character in the 20th century. Post–World War II, a number of residential developments were built, and the village has since grown steadily as a suburb of Tallinn.

Main economic activities in Ülespoole are still small‑scale farming and local retail, though a significant proportion of residents commute to Tallinn for employment. The village hosts a primary school, a small community centre, and an elementary church, which serve as focal points for social life. Annual local festivals focus on Estonian cultural traditions, and the surrounding forested areas provide space for recreational activities such as hiking and cycling.

Transport links include regular bus services to Tallinn and neighbouring towns. Road infrastructure is well maintained, with the Tallinn–Tallinna–Harku–Jõhvi highway passing nearby. Cycling routes through the natural landscape have been developed in recent years to encourage eco‑friendly commuting. The proximity to Tallinn’s transport hub makes Ülespoole an attractive residential option for commuters while maintaining a distinctly rural character.
