Ühektoimeline

Ühektoimeline is an Estonian term that translates to "single-acting" in English. It is most commonly used in the context of mechanical systems, particularly in hydraulics and pneumatics. A single-acting cylinder is a device that uses fluid pressure to produce a force in only one direction. Typically, a spring or external force is used to return the piston to its original position.

In a single-acting hydraulic cylinder, pressurized fluid is introduced into one port, extending the piston rod. When the pressure is released, a spring mechanism, or sometimes the weight of the load itself, retracts the piston. This design is simpler and often more cost-effective than double-acting cylinders, which can exert force in both directions.

Single-acting cylinders are found in a variety of applications. Examples include car jacks, where hydraulic pressure lifts the vehicle and gravity or a release valve allows it to descend. They are also used in some lifting mechanisms, presses, and clamping devices where controlled movement in one direction is sufficient and a return spring or other passive mechanism is adequate. The operational simplicity and lower component count contribute to their widespread use in specific industrial and automotive settings.
