Útvarpsrásir

Útvarpsrásir are the systems by which audio content is distributed to the public via radio waves and, increasingly, the internet. The term encompasses radio stations and the channels they broadcast on. Útvarpsrásir include public service stations funded or controlled by the state, private commercial networks funded by advertising or subscriptions, and community or campus stations serving local or specialized audiences. They typically offer a mix of news, music, talk, culture, and educational programming, and can operate on traditional broadcasts such as FM and AM, as well as digital platforms like DAB/DAB+, digital radio, satellite, and online streaming. Licensing, spectrum management, and content standards are usually overseen by national authorities to ensure fair access, technical reliability, and consumer protections.

In many countries, the development of útvarpsrásir began in the early 20th century with experimental transmissions, growing rapidly in the mid- to late 20th century. Public service broadcasters established broad national coverage, while private and community stations expanded diversity of voices. The digital era has brought streaming, podcasts, and on-demand audio, leading to hybrid models that combine traditional radio with online content. In Iceland, the public service broadcaster Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV) operates several radio channels as part of the national broadcasting system.
