When an aircraft exceeds the speed of sound, it creates a sonic boom, which is a shock wave that can be heard on the ground. This sonic boom is a significant consideration in the development and operation of supersonic aircraft, particularly for commercial aviation.

Historically, supersonic flight was a major milestone in aviation, achieved first by the Bell X-1 in 1947. Military aircraft were the first to widely adopt supersonic capabilities for purposes such as interceptor jets and reconnaissance. Commercial supersonic travel was briefly realized with aircraft like the Concorde, which operated from 1976 to 2003. However, several factors contributed to the discontinuation of commercial supersonic flights, including high operating costs, environmental concerns like noise pollution from sonic booms, and limited passenger capacity. Current research and development are exploring new technologies for quieter supersonic aircraft and potentially hypersonic travel, which involves speeds five times the speed of sound or greater.
