Östrogenreceptorer are proteins found within cells that bind to estrogen, a group of steroid hormones. When estrogen binds to its receptor, it triggers a cascade of events within the cell, influencing gene expression and ultimately affecting various cellular functions. These receptors are crucial for a wide range of physiological processes in both males and females.

There are two main types of estrogen receptors: estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and estrogen receptor beta (ERβ). While both bind estrogen, they have distinct tissue distributions and roles. ERα is primarily found in the uterus, mammary glands, and hypothalamus, playing a significant role in reproductive development and function. ERβ is more widely distributed, found in the ovaries, prostate, brain, and cardiovascular system, and is implicated in a broader spectrum of cellular activities.

The activation of estrogen receptors by estrogen is a key mechanism underlying the effects of estrogen on the body. This includes the development of secondary sexual characteristics, regulation of the menstrual cycle, bone health, and cardiovascular function. Dysregulation or altered expression of estrogen receptors can contribute to various diseases, including certain cancers like breast and prostate cancer, as well as osteoporosis and mood disorders. Research into estrogen receptors is ongoing, aiming to understand their complex roles and develop targeted therapies for related conditions.
