During this process, birds use their beaks to straighten and align individual feather barbs, removing debris, parasites, and any loose material that may have accumulated. They meticulously work their way through their entire plumage, from the head and neck to the wings and tail. This grooming ritual can also involve the application of preen oil, secreted from a gland near the base of the tail. This oil helps to condition the feathers and provides a degree of waterproofing.
