Öljynerotusvaiheet, or oil separation stages, refer to the processes used to separate oil from water or other impurities. These stages are crucial in various industrial applications, environmental cleanup, and even in domestic settings like wastewater treatment. The primary goal is to remove oil, which can be harmful to ecosystems and industrial equipment, by exploiting the differences in density and miscibility between oil and water.

The initial stage often involves gravity separation. In this phase, the oil-water mixture is allowed to sit undisturbed in a vessel. Due to its lower density, the oil naturally floats to the surface, while heavier components settle at the bottom. Skimmers can then be used to remove the accumulated oil layer. This is a simple yet effective method for removing a significant portion of free oil.

Following gravity separation, more advanced techniques may be employed. These can include coalescing separators, which use specially designed surfaces to encourage small oil droplets to merge into larger ones, making them easier to separate via gravity. Flotation techniques, such as dissolved air flotation (DAF), introduce air bubbles that attach to oil droplets, causing them to rise to the surface where they can be skimmed off.

For finer separations or when dealing with emulsified oils, chemical treatments might be used. Coagulants and flocculants are added to destabilize the emulsion, causing the oil particles to clump together. These clumps can then be separated through sedimentation or filtration. Finally, filtration systems, ranging from simple mesh filters to advanced membrane filters, can remove any remaining suspended oil particles. The specific combination of these stages depends on the type of oil, the concentration of contaminants, and the required purity of the separated water.
