Öljykohteet refers to oil prospects or potential oil-bearing geological formations. These are areas where exploration efforts are focused to discover and extract crude oil. Identifying oil prospects involves a combination of geological surveys, seismic imaging, and the analysis of rock formations to determine the likelihood of hydrocarbon accumulation. Geologists study rock types, stratigraphy, and structural geology to pinpoint areas that may contain porous and permeable reservoir rocks sealed by impermeable caprocks, creating the conditions for oil to form and be trapped.

The process of evaluating oil prospects often involves assessing factors such as the presence of source rocks (where oil is generated), reservoir rocks (where oil is stored), seal rocks (which prevent oil from escaping), and trap structures (geological configurations that accumulate the oil). Seismic data, gathered by sending sound waves into the earth and analyzing their reflections, is a crucial tool in mapping subsurface structures and identifying potential traps. The economic viability of an oil prospect is also considered, taking into account the estimated volume of oil, the cost of exploration and extraction, and market prices. Many oil prospects are ultimately deemed uneconomical or do not contain sufficient quantities of oil to warrant further development.
