Érzészavarokat, known scientifically as sensory processing disorder (SPD), is a neurological condition where the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. People with SPD may be over-sensitive or under-sensitive to sensory input, or they may have difficulty integrating sensory information from different sources. This can affect their ability to perform everyday tasks and interact with their environment.

The sensory systems involved include not only the well-known five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch) but also proprioception (awareness of body position) and the vestibular system (sense of balance and movement). For instance, an individual with SPD might find certain sounds overwhelming, textures unbearable, or have a reduced awareness of pain. Conversely, others might seek out intense sensory experiences.

Symptoms can manifest in various ways, impacting motor skills, attention, emotional regulation, and social interactions. It's important to note that SPD is not a developmental delay or an intellectual disability, though it can co-occur with these. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough assessment by an occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration. While there is no cure, interventions such as sensory integration therapy can help individuals develop coping strategies and improve their ability to process sensory information, leading to a better quality of life.
