Életcikluselemzéseket, often translated as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), is a methodology for evaluating the environmental impacts of a product, process, or service throughout its entire life cycle. This includes all stages from raw material extraction, through manufacturing, distribution, use, and ultimately, disposal or recycling. The goal of LCA is to quantify the environmental burdens associated with each stage, such as greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and waste generation, to identify the most significant environmental hotspots.

The process of conducting an LCA typically involves four main phases: goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation. In the goal and scope definition, the purpose of the study and the system boundaries are clearly defined. The inventory analysis involves collecting data on all inputs and outputs of the system, including energy, materials, and emissions. The impact assessment translates these inventory data into potential environmental impacts, using various impact categories. Finally, the interpretation phase involves analyzing the results, identifying significant issues, and making recommendations based on the findings.

LCA is a valuable tool for businesses, policymakers, and researchers. It can inform product design, support environmental claims, guide policy decisions, and promote sustainable consumption and production patterns.
