Återvinningskretser, often translated as recycling loops or circular systems, refer to the processes and infrastructure designed to recover and reuse materials from waste streams. The fundamental principle is to transform waste into valuable resources, minimizing the need for virgin materials and reducing environmental impact. This concept is a cornerstone of the circular economy, aiming to keep products and materials in use for as long as possible.

The process typically begins with waste separation at the source, whether by households or industries. Collected waste is then transported to sorting facilities where materials are further categorized based on type, such as paper, plastic, glass, metal, and organic matter. Specialized technologies are employed for efficient sorting, including mechanical separation, optical scanners, and manual inspection.

Once sorted, materials enter specific recycling loops. For example, paper is pulped and reprocessed into new paper products, plastics are melted down and molded into new items, and metals are smelted and reformed. Organic waste can be composted or used in anaerobic digestion to produce biogas and fertilizer.

Effective återvinningskretser require robust logistics, advanced recycling technologies, and public participation. Challenges include contamination of waste streams, the complexity of certain materials (like composite packaging), and the economic viability of reprocessing compared to using raw materials.
