Äärimmäisyystilastot, known in English as extreme value statistics, is a branch of statistics that deals with the extreme deviations from the median of a probability distribution. It focuses on the statistical analysis of rare events and the probability of their occurrence. This field is crucial in various disciplines where understanding the likelihood of extreme outcomes is important.

The core concepts in extreme value statistics revolve around the properties of maximum and minimum values from a large set of random variables. When dealing with large sample sizes, the distribution of these extreme values can often be approximated by specific distributions, regardless of the original distribution of the data. These limiting distributions are known as extreme value distributions, most notably the Gumbel, Fréchet, and Weibull distributions, which can be unified into the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution.

Applications of extreme value statistics are widespread.
