Ääntämisen

Ääntämisen is the act of producing speech sounds and is used in Finnish to refer to pronunciation in both linguistic description and language teaching. In a broader sense, ääntäminen encompasses the articulatory and auditory aspects of how sounds are formed, heard, and interpreted.

In linguistic terms, ääntäminen sits at the intersection of articulatory phonetics (how the lips, tongue, vocal cords and other organs shape sounds) and phonology (how sounds function within a language). It also includes perceptual aspects, such as how listeners identify and distinguish sounds in real time. For language learners, pronunciation is a practical skill that affects intelligibility and naturalness.

Finnish presents several features that influence ääntäminen. The language has eight vowel phonemes with a phonemic length distinction, and consonants can also be lengthened (gemination). Vowel harmony affects suffix vowels, which learners must align with stem vowels in many word forms. Stress in Finnish typically falls on the first syllable, and a pitch-oriented intonation system (tone accents) shapes the overall sound pattern.
