Causes are diverse and can include overuse or misuse of the voice, such as prolonged shouting or singing. Infections like laryngitis, which is inflammation of the larynx, are a common culprit.

Other contributing factors include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid irritates the vocal cords, and the presence of nodules, polyps, or cysts on the vocal folds. These growths can be benign but can significantly alter voice quality. Neurological conditions, smoking, and certain medical treatments like radiation therapy can also lead to vocal fold dysfunction.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination by a doctor, often an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist), who may use a laryngoscope to visualize the vocal cords. Treatment varies depending on the underlying cause. For overuse, rest and vocal hygiene are crucial. Infections are often treated with medication and rest. GERD management involves dietary changes and medication. Surgical removal may be necessary for larger polyps or cysts. Prevention strategies include proper vocal technique, staying hydrated, avoiding irritants like smoke, and seeking prompt medical attention for persistent voice changes.
