In reality, no material is a perfect reflector or absorber, so values typically fall somewhere within this range.

The sound absorption coefficient is not a single fixed value but rather a function of frequency. This means that a material may absorb certain frequencies of sound more effectively than others. This frequency dependence is crucial when selecting materials for acoustic treatment, as different applications require absorption across specific frequency bands. For instance, materials designed to reduce reverberation in a concert hall will need to have good absorption characteristics across a wide range of audible frequencies.

Factors influencing a material's sound absorption coefficient include its porosity, surface texture, thickness, and how it is mounted. Porous materials like open-cell foams, mineral wool, and certain fabrics tend to absorb sound well because sound waves can penetrate their structure, with friction and viscous losses converting sound energy into heat.
