Organization and services vary: an Ärztpraxis can be a solo practice or a group practice (Praxisgemeinschaft). Some physicians work in medical centers (MVZ). Staff typically includes medical assistants, nurses, and reception personnel. Services encompass consultations, physical examinations, diagnostics, minor procedures, prescription handling, and referrals to specialists. Appointment systems and triage help manage patient flow and access.

Regulation and billing are shaped by professional rules and health-system structures. Doctors must be licensed and adhere to national and regional Berufsordnungen (professional codes). Over many health systems, outpatient care is financed through health insurance, with private patients often billed under the Gebührenordnung für Ärzte (GOÄ) and public coverage using the Einheitlicher Bewertungsmaßstab (EBM) in some countries. The specific billing mechanism and reimbursement arrangements vary by country and region.
