The process typically begins at the power plant where electricity is generated at a relatively low voltage. This voltage is then stepped up to very high levels using transformers. This high-voltage transmission is essential for minimizing energy loss over long distances. The higher the voltage, the lower the current for a given amount of power, and lower current means less resistive heating in the transmission lines.

These high-voltage lines are usually carried on tall pylons across the landscape.
