Zuurstofspecies is a Dutch term that translates to "oxygen species" in English. It refers to any molecular or atomic form of oxygen that is not in its most stable diatomic form, O2. This broad category encompasses a variety of reactive and non-reactive species.

Among the most important reactive oxygen species are free radicals, such as the superoxide radical (O2•−) and the hydroxyl radical (•OH). These highly unstable molecules have unpaired electrons, making them prone to reacting with and damaging biological molecules like DNA, proteins, and lipids. Another significant reactive oxygen species is hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which, while not a radical itself, can readily decompose into highly reactive hydroxyl radicals.

Other oxygen species include ozone (O3), which is a powerful oxidant and plays a crucial role in the Earth's stratosphere by absorbing ultraviolet radiation, and singlet oxygen (1O2), an electronically excited form of molecular oxygen that can be generated photochemically.

These oxygen species can be produced endogenously within biological systems as byproducts of normal metabolic processes, particularly during cellular respiration. They can also be generated exogenously from environmental factors like pollution, radiation, and certain chemicals. While often associated with cellular damage and oxidative stress, which are implicated in aging and various diseases, some reactive oxygen species also play important signaling roles in healthy cells. The balance between the production and detoxification of oxygen species is critical for maintaining cellular health.
