Zelt is the German word for a portable shelter used for camping, expeditions, and temporary housing. A typical tent consists of an outer rainfly, an inner tent, a pole frame, and a groundsheet. It is pitched by assembling poles and threading fabric onto the frame, then securing the structure with stakes and guy lines. Tents are designed to keep occupants dry and shielded from wind, with ventilation features to reduce condensation.

Materials vary. Common fabrics include cotton canvas, polyester, and nylon, often with polyurethane or silicon coatings for water resistance. Frames are usually aluminum or fiberglass; some ultralight models use carbon fiber. Tents come in shapes such as freestanding domes, tunnel designs, and cabin styles. They range from lightweight one- or two-person models to larger family tents, and from three-season to expedition-grade variants.

History: Portable shelters have been used by nomadic and military cultures for centuries. The German word Zelt appears in medieval sources, and tent design evolved through the 18th–20th centuries with new fabrics and pole technology. The late 20th century saw synthetic materials greatly reduce weight and increase durability, broadening civilian and outdoor use.
