The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a small freshwater fish belonging to the minnow family Cyprinidae. Native to the Himalayan region of South Asia, it is found in temperate environments. Wild zebrafish are typically striped, with a silvery-blue body and horizontal golden stripes, hence their common name. They are schooling fish and prefer to live in groups.

In aquariums, zebrafish are popular due to their hardiness, ease of care, and attractive coloration. Selective breeding has resulted in numerous color variations and fin types, such as the popular "glofish" which are genetically engineered to fluoresce under certain light conditions. They are omnivorous and generally peaceful, making them suitable for community aquariums. Their sensitivity to water quality also makes them useful as bio-indicators in environmental monitoring.
