Yökkäilyrefleksi, also known as the gag reflex, is an involuntary physiological response that helps prevent choking by expelling foreign objects from the pharynx. It is triggered by stimulation of the mucous membranes in the back of the throat, specifically the oropharynx and laryngopharynx.

The mechanism of theökkäilyrefleksi involves a complex interplay of nerves and muscles. Sensory receptors in the throat send signals via the glossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve IX) and vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) to the brainstem, specifically the nucleus tractus solitarii. This area then coordinates a motor response through various cranial nerves, leading to the contraction of pharyngeal muscles, elevation of the soft palate, and a forceful expulsion of air from the lungs. This coordinated action effectively pushes the offending substance forward and out of the airway.

While a protective reflex, theökkäilyrefleksi can be exaggerated or hypersensitive in some individuals, leading to discomfort or even vomiting with minimal stimulation. This hypersensitivity can be associated with various conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), anxiety disorders, or as a side effect of certain medications. Conversely, a diminished or absent gag reflex can indicate neurological damage or be a symptom of certain medical conditions, increasing the risk of aspiration and choking. Therapies to manage an overactive gag reflex may include behavioral techniques, desensitization exercises, or pharmacological interventions.
