ytstabilisatorer are chemical compounds added to materials, particularly polymers, to prevent or slow down degradation caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV light, a component of sunlight, possesses enough energy to break chemical bonds within polymer chains, leading to undesirable changes such as discoloration, loss of mechanical strength, cracking, and chalking. These effects are collectively known as photodegradation.

There are several classes of ytstabilisatorer, each working through different mechanisms to protect the material. Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS) are a very common and effective class. They function by scavenging free radicals that are formed during the photodegradation process, thereby interrupting the chain reaction of degradation. UV absorbers, another important type, work by absorbing UV radiation and dissipating it as heat, preventing it from reaching and damaging the polymer. Quenchers are also used; they deactivate excited states of molecules that could otherwise lead to degradation.

The choice of ytstabilisator depends on the specific polymer, the intended application, the expected exposure conditions, and cost considerations. These additives are crucial for extending the service life of a wide range of products, including plastics used in outdoor furniture, automotive parts, agricultural films, textiles, and building materials. Without effective ytstabilisatorer, many of these products would degrade rapidly when exposed to sunlight, rendering them unusable and leading to premature replacement.
