Yskiminen is the Finnish term for coughing, the act of expelling air from the lungs through the respiratory tract. It is a common reflex designed to clear the airways of irritants, mucus, or foreign material. The cough reflex is initiated when sensory receptors in the airways are stimulated; signals travel via the vagus nerve to the brainstem, which coordinates a sequence of deep inspiration, glottal closure, abdominal and chest muscle contraction, and abrupt glottis opening to produce a sudden burst of air.

Causes of yskiminen are varied. It is most commonly linked to respiratory infections such as the common cold or flu, but can also arise from allergies, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, smoking, environmental irritants, postnasal drip, and gastroesophageal reflux. Some medications, notably certain blood pressure drugs called ACE inhibitors, can also trigger coughing. In children, viral infections are a frequent cause, while in older adults persistent coughing requires closer medical evaluation.

Classification and management typically distinguish between acute and chronic cough, as well as productive (wet) and non-productive (dry) cough. Acute coughs usually resolve as the underlying illness improves, whereas chronic cough lasts longer than about eight weeks and warrants medical assessment. Treatments focus on the cause and may include symptomatic measures such as fluids and humidified air; for dry cough, short-acting antitussives are sometimes used, and for productive cough, expectorants or chest physiotherapy may be considered. The evidence for some over-the-counter remedies varies, and medical advice is recommended when symptoms are severe or persistent.
