Ympäristörajat, or environmental limits, refer to the boundaries within which human activities can operate without causing irreversible or unacceptable damage to the Earth's systems. These concepts are crucial for understanding planetary boundaries, a framework developed by scientists to identify and quantify nine critical Earth system processes that have boundaries. Exceeding these boundaries significantly increases the risk of large-scale, abrupt, and irreversible environmental changes.

The nine planetary boundaries identified are: climate change, biosphere integrity (biosphere degradation and genetic diversity loss), land-system change, freshwater use, biogeochemical flows (phosphorus and nitrogen cycles), ocean acidification, atmospheric aerosol loading, stratospheric ozone depletion, and novel entities (e.g., chemical pollution). For each boundary, a safe operating space has been defined. Crossing these thresholds does not necessarily mean immediate catastrophe, but rather a substantial increase in the likelihood of transgressing tipping points, leading to potentially devastating consequences for human civilization and the natural world.
