Ympäristöjärjestelmän, or ecosystem in English, refers to a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their physical environment. These interactions create a complex web of relationships that sustain life. An ecosystem can vary greatly in size, from a small pond to an entire forest or ocean.

Key components of an ecosystem include biotic factors, which are the living elements such as plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms, and abiotic factors, which are the non-living physical and chemical elements like sunlight, water, soil, temperature, and air. The interplay between these biotic and abiotic factors determines the structure and function of the ecosystem.

Energy flows through an ecosystem, typically starting with producers (plants) that convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. This energy is then transferred to consumers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores) and finally to decomposers (bacteria, fungi) which break down dead organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil. Nutrient cycling is another crucial process, where essential elements are continuously recycled within the ecosystem.

Ecosystems are dynamic and constantly changing. Changes can be caused by natural events like fires or floods, or by human activities such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change. The health of an ecosystem is often measured by its biodiversity, which is the variety of life within it. Greater biodiversity generally indicates a more stable and resilient ecosystem. Understanding and protecting ecosystems is vital for maintaining the planet's health and supporting all forms of life.
