Ylijännitesuojaimet, also known as surge protectors, are electrical devices designed to protect electronic equipment from voltage spikes or surges. These surges can be caused by various events, including lightning strikes, power outages, or the switching of heavy electrical loads. When a voltage surge occurs, the ylijännitesuojain diverts the excess voltage away from the connected equipment, thereby preventing damage.

These components have a high resistance at normal voltages but their resistance drops dramatically when the voltage exceeds a certain threshold. Ylijännitesuojaimet are rated based on their joule rating, which indicates how much energy they can absorb before failing. A higher joule rating generally means better protection. They also have a clamping voltage, which is the maximum voltage that will be allowed to pass through to the protected equipment during a surge. Lower clamping voltages offer more robust protection.

These devices are widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings to safeguard valuable electronics such as computers, televisions, home entertainment systems, and sensitive industrial machinery. They can be found as standalone power strips with built-in protection or as integrated components within larger electrical systems. Proper installation and periodic inspection are important to ensure their continued effectiveness.
