Yhteyttämisvaihtoehto refers to the different strategies or methods that organisms, primarily plants and some algae and bacteria, can employ to carry out photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which light energy is converted into chemical energy in the form of glucose, using carbon dioxide and water. The main differences in yhteyttämisvaihtoehto lie in how they fix carbon dioxide, especially in relation to the enzyme RuBisCO, which is responsible for the initial carboxylation step.

The most common yhteyttämisvaihtoehto is C3 photosynthesis, where carbon dioxide is directly fixed into a three-carbon compound, 3-phosphoglycerate, by RuBisCO. This process is efficient in moderate temperatures and moist conditions but can suffer from photorespiration, where RuBisCO binds to oxygen instead of carbon dioxide, reducing photosynthetic efficiency.

Another significant yhteyttämisvaihtoehto is C4 photosynthesis. This strategy is found in plants adapted to hot, dry environments. C4 plants first fix carbon dioxide into a four-carbon compound in mesophyll cells and then transport it to bundle sheath cells, where it is released and refixed by RuBisCO in a more concentrated form. This spatial separation of carbon fixation minimizes photorespiration, making C4 plants more efficient under high light and temperature.

A third yhteyttämisvaihtoehto is CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) photosynthesis. This is common in succulent plants and arid-adapted species. CAM plants open their stomata at night to absorb carbon dioxide and fix it into organic acids, which are stored. During the day, when stomata are closed to conserve water, these acids are broken down, releasing carbon dioxide for use in the Calvin cycle. This temporal separation of carbon fixation allows for efficient water use in extremely dry conditions.
