Yhdistämislogiikka, known in English as unification, is a fundamental concept in automated reasoning and logic programming. It is a process of finding a substitution for variables that makes two terms syntactically identical. This is a core operation in languages like Prolog.

The goal of unification is to make two terms, which can be constants, variables, or complex structures called terms, look exactly the same. For instance, unifying the terms "father(X)" and "father(john)" would result in the substitution X = john. If the terms are already identical, no substitution is needed. If they are structurally different and cannot be made identical by substitution, the unification fails.

Unification is crucial for pattern matching and variable instantiation in logic programming. When a query is made in Prolog, the system attempts to unify the query with the head of one of the available clauses. If successful, the variables in the query are instantiated with the corresponding values from the clause head, and the system proceeds to evaluate the body of the clause.

The algorithm for unification is generally efficient and deterministic. It involves systematically comparing the two terms, handling cases for constants, variables, and compound terms. A key aspect is the occurs check, which prevents a variable from being unified with a term that contains the variable itself, thus avoiding infinite structures. This ensures that the unification process terminates and produces sound results.
