Xerófilo is a term used to describe an organism, typically a plant or animal, that is adapted to survive in an arid or desert environment. The name itself comes from the Greek words "xeros" meaning dry and "philos" meaning loving. These organisms have evolved a variety of specialized characteristics to cope with a lack of water, high temperatures, and intense sunlight.

Plant xerophiles, often referred to as xerophytes, exhibit adaptations such as deep root systems to access underground water, reduced leaf surface area to minimize water loss through transpiration, waxy coatings on leaves or stems, and the ability to store water in succulent tissues. Some desert plants also have a short life cycle, germinating, growing, and reproducing rapidly after infrequent rainfall.

Animal xerophiles, or xerocoles, have developed strategies to conserve water and tolerate heat. This can include nocturnal activity to avoid the hottest part of the day, efficient kidneys that produce concentrated urine, the ability to obtain water from their food, and adaptations for heat dissipation. Examples of animal xerophiles include camels, various reptiles like lizards and snakes, and many desert insects and rodents. The survival of xerophiles is a testament to the remarkable adaptability of life in extreme conditions.
