Xenolinguistics is an interdisciplinary field that studies hypothetical alien languages and non-human intelligent communication. It seeks to understand how an extraterrestrial or non-human mind might encode information, and how humans might interpret such signals in the event of contact.

The scope includes the analysis of potential alien languages, the design of artificial or constructed communication systems intended for intelligences beyond Earth, and the study of non-human communication as a comparative model for universal principles of information exchange. Researchers draw on linguistics, semiotics, cognitive science, information theory, and astrobiology.

Key questions address whether alien communication would use symbols with syntax, semantics, and pragmatics; what constraints universal to intelligent signal systems exist; and how to establish a common frame of reference, calibration signals, and ontologies to support translation. The field also considers data-poor situations and the risk of anthropocentric bias.

Historically, xenolinguistics emerged from speculative literature and SETI-inspired discussions about how contact might occur; it remains largely theoretical pending empirical contact. It overlaps with exolinguistics and biosemiotics, and it informs strategies for interstellar messaging (METI) and prospective decoding efforts.

Ethical and epistemological issues include the limits of translation, the possibility of misinterpretation, and the responsibility of researchers to avoid assumptions about alien cognition. The discipline emphasizes rigorous methodology, openness about uncertainty, and collaboration across linguistics, physics, philosophy, and anthropology.
