Xanthochrome is a descriptive term used to denote yellowish coloration in a substance, organism, or material. Derived from the Greek xanthos, meaning yellow, and chroma, color, the word is used across disciplines as a neutral color descriptor rather than to imply a taxonomic classification.

In biology, xanthochrome describes organisms or tissues that display yellow pigments. The term is often associated with carotenoids and their yellow pigments, such as xanthophylls, which occur in plants, algae, and many animal tissues. Xanthochromic coloration can appear in fish, insects, flowers, and other organisms when yellow pigments are present or when light scattering highlights a yellow hue. The descriptor is typically used alongside other color terms to characterize morphs or specimens.

In medicine and clinical contexts, xanthochrome (or xanthochromia) refers to a yellowish discoloration of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) caused by breakdown products of blood, such as bilirubin. Xanthochromia in CSF is an important diagnostic sign that can indicate prior subarachnoid hemorrhage or other bleeding into the cerebrospinal space. The term can also appear in pathology when tissues exhibit a yellowish staining due to pigment deposition or aging.

Outside of biology and medicine, xanthochrome may be used in geology, mineralogy, and materials science to describe yellow coloration caused by impurities, coloration changes during aging, or pigment-based coatings. In all uses, xanthochrome simply signifies a yellowish appearance rather than a specific chemical or taxonomic grouping.
