Worthiness refers to the state or quality of being worthy, that is, having value, merit, or deservingness. The term is used across ethics, law, religion, and everyday speech to describe whether a person, action, or thing is deserving of esteem, reward, honor, or other positive treatment. Etymologically, it derives from worth and the suffix -ness, tracing back to Old English and Germanic roots that connote value and entitlement.

In philosophy, worthiness is often tied to moral merit: an agent may be said to be worthy of praise or of moral consideration when their character or actions reflect virtue, intention, or adherence to reason. Distinctions are made between intrinsic worth (being valuable in itself) and instrumental worth (valuable as a means to an end).
