Wortelrespons, often translated as root response, refers to the growth and directional changes of plant roots in reaction to environmental cues. The primary function of these responses is to optimize water and nutrient uptake, while also providing stability and anchorage for the plant.

Roots sense their environment through the root tip, particularly the root cap. Gravity is detected by statoliths in columella cells, leading to asymmetric distribution of the growth hormone auxin. This hormonal redistribution slows cell elongation on one side and accelerates it on the other, causing the root to bend downward in a process known as positive gravitropism. Roots can also respond to moisture (hydrotropism), nutrients (chemotropism), and physical obstacles (thigmotropism). While gravitropism is typically dominant, other cues can modulate the direction and rate of growth.
