wireway

A wireway is an enclosed channel used to route and protect electrical conductors in industrial and commercial installations. Wireways are typically rectangular and can be metal (such as steel or aluminum) or nonmetallic. They are usually supplied with a removable cover to allow access for pulling conductors, performing splices, and making terminations. Sizes and cross sections vary to accommodate different conductor counts and routing constraints.

Wireways are installed to run conductors between equipment, control panels, and devices, often along walls, under floors, or on equipment frames. They provide a protected, organized path that makes maintenance easier and reduces the risk of damage from physical impact or environmental exposure. Some designs include partitions to separate circuits, support rails for internal devices, or mounting provisions for accessories.

Weatherproof or damp-location versions are available for industrial environments, and nonmetallic wireways are used where corrosion resistance or electrical insulation is important. End fittings, junctions, and accessories allow crossing, turning, and terminating runs.

Compliance and installation are governed primarily by electrical codes, such as the NEC in the United States, where wireways are addressed in articles related to wireways, racks, and auxiliary gutters. Designers select appropriate sizes to meet conductor fill requirements, provide proper supports and covers, and ensure that splices and terminations are made in listed enclosures as required. Regular inspection and maintenance are recommended to preserve enclosure integrity and accessibility.
