Wintergreenöljy, known scientifically as Gaultheria procumbens essential oil, is derived from the leaves of the wintergreen plant. The primary active compound in wintergreen oil is methyl salicylate, which is chemically very similar to aspirin. This similarity contributes to its characteristic aroma and many of its traditional uses.

Historically, indigenous peoples used wintergreen leaves for medicinal purposes. The oil is extracted through steam distillation of the dried leaves. It possesses a strong, sweet, minty scent, which makes it a popular ingredient in flavorings, particularly for candies, chewing gum, and toothpaste, as well as in perfumes and aromatherapy products.

In topical applications, wintergreen oil is often diluted with a carrier oil before being applied to the skin. It is frequently used in liniments and balms intended to soothe sore muscles and joints due to its warming sensation. However, due to the high concentration of methyl salicylate, it is crucial to use wintergreen oil with caution and in diluted forms. Ingestion of wintergreen oil can be toxic, and it should never be consumed. It is also advised to avoid use on broken skin or by individuals with aspirin sensitivities or those taking anticoagulant medications.
