Windmolen is a type of wind-powered machine that uses the energy generated by wind to perform tasks such as milling grain, pumping water, and powering machinery. The term windmolen is primarily used in Dutch-speaking regions, particularly in the Netherlands.

History

The earliest known windmolen dates back to ancient Persia in the 9th century AD, where it was used to pump water from the Nile River. Later, the technology spread to the Middle East and Europe during the Middle Ages. In the 14th century, windmolen became a common sight in the Netherlands, where it was used to power sawmills and grain mills.

Design and operation

A windmolen typically consists of a horizontal or vertical rotor with blades, attached to a shaft or axis. As the wind turns the blades, it converts the kinetic energy into rotational energy, which is then transmitted to a gearbox or directly to the load. Windmolen can be powered for a wide range of tasks, including grinding grain, pumping water, and powering machinery such as sawmills and fulling mills.

Rope and tackle systems are often used to transmit power from the windmolen to the load. The direction of rotation of the wheel is typically controlled by disk-shaped structure called a "convertpieuwer".

Compared to modern wind turbines, windmolen are relatively small and traditional in design. However, they have played an important role in the development of technology and the shaping of cultures in their regions of operation.
