Wind instrument is a category of musical instrument in which sound is produced by vibrating air that the player breathes into or across. The vibrating air column resides within the instrument’s bore, and its length and shape determine pitch, timbre, and projection. By altering fingerings, keys, valves, or slides, players change the effective air length and thus the pitch, while breath support and articulation influence dynamics and tone quality.

Traditionally wind instruments are divided into brass and woodwinds. Brass instruments produce sound by buzzing the lips against a mouthpiece, with the air column lengthened by valves or a slide. Pitch adjustment relies on lip tension, air pressure, and the mechanism used to change length. Woodwinds produce sound either by a vibrating reed (single-reed like clarinet and saxophone; double-reed like oboe and bassoon) or by air blown against an edge, as in flutes. Common examples include flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone (woodwinds) and trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba (brass).

Playing technique varies by instrument type; woodwinds rely on embouchure, tonguing, and breath control, while brass players use lip vibration, air support, and valve or slide operation. Many wind instruments are transposing instruments, sounding at a different pitch than written. They are central to orchestras, concert bands, chamber ensembles, jazz, and traditional music worldwide.

Historically, wind instruments have ancient origins in flutes and reed pipes, with later innovations introducing keys, pads, and valves to expand range and chromatic capability. Materials range from wood and brass to plastic, and design choices influence timbre, intonation, and projection.
