Transposing is the act of changing the position, orientation, or form of something relative to a reference frame. In many fields the term describes moving an element to a different context while preserving certain relationships. The specifics vary by discipline, but the core idea is a shift into a related new setting.

In music, transposition means shifting every note of a piece by a constant interval, producing a version in a different key while keeping the same intervallic relationships. It is used to suit vocal ranges or instruments. Some instruments, such as B-flat or E-flat wind instruments, sound at concert pitch when their parts are written transposed. Notation is adjusted so rhythms and intervals remain intact, even though the pitch letters change.

Mathematically, the transpose is an operation on a matrix or array that swaps its rows and columns. Denoted A^T, it satisfies (AB)^T = B^T A^T and (A^T)^T = A. Transpose concepts extend to higher dimensions as reordering axes. In computing and data science, transposition reorients data layouts, such as converting between row-major and column-major forms, or turning a data table so that rows become columns.

In genetics, transposition refers to the movement of transposable elements, or transposons, within a genome. These DNA sequences can relocate, potentially causing mutations or altering gene regulation. Transposition is mediated by enzymes called transposases and can occur via cut-and-paste or copy-and-paste mechanisms. Transposable elements contribute to genome evolution, variation, and sometimes disease, and are studied across many organisms.
