Windeldermatitis, also known as diaper rash, is a common skin irritation affecting the diaper area of infants and toddlers. It is characterized by redness, inflammation, and sometimes small bumps or blisters on the skin. The primary cause is prolonged contact of the skin with moisture from urine and feces, which can break down the skin's protective barrier. Friction from the diaper can exacerbate the irritation.

Several factors can contribute to the development of windeldermatitis. These include infrequent diaper changes, sensitive skin, exposure to irritants like certain soaps or detergents, and the introduction of new foods into a baby's diet, which can alter stool composition. Yeast infections, specifically Candida albicans, can also develop in the warm, moist environment of a diaper, leading to a more persistent and distinct rash, often with satellite lesions.

Treatment typically involves frequent diaper changes to keep the area dry, gentle cleaning with water or mild, fragrance-free cleansers, and thorough drying. Applying a barrier cream or ointment containing zinc oxide or petroleum jelly can help protect the skin from moisture and irritants. For suspected yeast infections, antifungal creams may be prescribed by a healthcare professional. Avoiding harsh products and ensuring a good diaper fit are important preventative measures. If the rash is severe, does not improve with home care, or shows signs of infection like pus or fever, medical attention should be sought.
